Our Mandate

These are the results from the visioning session held April 30th, 2013 at King George Public School.

Process

Small group priorities were recorded on three flip chart pages. All attendees voted for their top three. Red dots equalled 30 points. Green dots equalled 20 points. Yellow dots equalled 10 points. Weighted scores were calculated to determine a mandate coming from parents and staff.

Results

# 1: Combination of a natural ‘playscape’ with select equipment for climbing and fitness. (1040 points)

  • Playscape should contain a wide variety of natural objects and greenery and encourage open-ended play, with considerations for ages / steps / stages.
  • Within the playscape, include climbing and other fitness equipment in spread-out stations rather than clustered together in one big structure. Create a circuit/obstacle course, with pathways.
  • Features mentioned were: monkey bars, climbing area (wall), gymnastic bar, parallel bars and rope climber.

# 2: Nature spaces. (560 points)

  • Our schoolyard needs natural spaces with trees, shrubs, tall grasses and other greenery.
  •  Features mentioned were: teepees, play poles, wood benches, logs, stones in a dry river bed, mulch, large rocks, hills, planters and picnic tables.
  • Have natural spaces that are ‘quiet areas’ with seating that allow for passive play.
  • Outdoor classroom space.

# 3: Shade. (240 points)

  • Our schoolyard needs to be shaded, either by more trees or by installing structures and fabrics that provide it.
  • Quiet places for passive play need to be shady spaces.

#4: Sports and games. (180 points)

  • Have 2 mini-soccers rather than current field. Remove current posts.
  • Develop the current sand area (has no toys now) and consider more digging areas. Long jump use for track and field.
  • Painted games on tarmac that change periodically.
  • Graffiti station (plexiglass panels hung from chain link fence)

#5: Gardens for flowers, herbs and vegetables. (140 points)

  • Need a water source.
  • Community partnership.
